CPP, EI, and RRSP — what takes money from your paycheque

Three Canada-specific deductions affect every software engineer's take-home:

  • CPP (Canada Pension Plan): 5.95% on earnings between C$3,500–C$69,700 ($3,948/year at maximum). CPP2 applies on C$69,700–C$81,300 at 4% (up to C$463 extra). You stop paying once you hit the YMPE each year.
  • EI (Employment Insurance): 1.66% on insurable earnings up to C$63,200 (maximum C$1,049/year). Funds up to 45 weeks of unemployment benefits at 55% of earnings.
  • RRSP contributions: Unlike 401(k) in the US, RRSP is not automatically deducted from payroll. But contributions reduce taxable income dollar for dollar. A senior engineer contributing C$20,000/year to RRSP on C$130,000 reduces their tax bill by approximately C$5,600–C$6,800 depending on province.

Frequently asked questions

A mid-level software engineer in Ontario on C$100,000 takes home approximately C$6,300–C$6,500/month after federal tax, Ontario provincial tax, CPP, and EI. A senior on C$135,000 in Ontario takes home about C$7,700/month. In Alberta (lower provincial tax), the same salaries give roughly C$200–$400/month more. Quebec is lowest — a senior on C$135,000 takes home around C$7,100/month there.

Moderate — significantly better than Germany, slightly below Australia in purchasing power, well below the US. Canadian tech salaries have risen substantially since 2020 (partly due to US remote hiring), but salaries remain 30–50% lower than comparable US roles in absolute terms. For engineers considering Canada vs Australia, they're broadly comparable in total compensation; Canada wins on immigration accessibility, Australia wins on weather and work-life balance. For engineers considering US vs Canada, the US wins financially at senior levels by a wide margin.

Across all experience levels, the average software engineer salary in Canada is approximately C$87,855–C$105,753 in 2026. In Ontario and BC, mid-range engineers with 3–6 years experience earn C$95,000–C$120,000. Vancouver and Toronto tend to see 10–15% premiums over the national average. Entry level starts at C$65,000–$80,000; senior engineers with 8+ years typically earn C$130,000–C$170,000.
