Germany Salary Tax Questions
On a €55,000 gross salary in 2026, your take-home pay (Nettolohn) is approximately €34,300/year (€2,860/month). Income tax comes to roughly €9,100, and social insurance contributions (health, pension, unemployment, long-term care) total around €11,600.
Germany's social contribution burden is significant — roughly 21% of gross salary goes to social insurance alone, though those contributions reduce your taxable income for Lohnsteuer.
German income tax uses a progressive formula (not simple brackets). Approximate effective rates:
0% on income up to €11,784 (Grundfreibetrag)
~14–24% on €11,785–€22,000
~24–42% on €22,001–€66,760
42% on €66,761–€277,825 (top rate zone)
45% on income above €277,825 (Reichensteuersatz)
Employee social insurance contributions 2026:
Pension insurance (Rentenversicherung): 9.3% up to €90,600
Health insurance (Krankenversicherung): 8.75% up to €66,150 (avg statutory rate)
Unemployment insurance (Arbeitslosenversicherung): 1.3% up to €90,600
Long-term care (Pflegeversicherung): 1.7% (2.2% without children) up to €66,150
Germany has 6 tax classes (Steuerklassen) that affect how much tax is withheld from your payslip:
Class I: Single, widowed, divorced
Class III: Married, higher-earning spouse
Class IV: Married, similar earnings
Class V: Married, lower-earning spouse
Our calculator uses Steuerklasse I (single). Married couples often benefit from the splitting method (Ehegattensplitting) which reduces total tax significantly.
The solidarity surcharge (Soli) was largely abolished in 2021. Since then, only approximately the top 3.5% of earners (income tax above ~€18,130/year, roughly gross above ~€67,000) still pay it at 5.5% of their income tax liability.
Our calculator applies Soli only for high incomes where it still applies.
