The Netherlands operates a two-rate Box 1 system for employment income.

Box 1 (employment income) rates 2026:
36.97% on income up to €75,518 (combined income tax + AOW/ANW/WLZ national insurance)
49.5% on income above €75,518

Note: The 36.97% rate includes ~27.65% national insurance premiums (AOW pension + ANW survivor + WLZ long-term care). After retirement age, the AOW portion is not paid, lowering the rate to ~19.03% on the lower bracket.

Key tax credits in 2026:
Arbeidskorting (labour tax credit): Up to €5,532 for workers, phases out above €38,098
Algemene heffingskorting (general credit): Up to €3,068 for incomes below ~€24,813, phases out to €0 above ~€75,518

These credits significantly reduce the effective tax rate — especially for incomes between €35,000–€70,000.

The 30% ruling (30%-regeling) allows qualifying expat workers to receive up to 30% of their salary tax-free for 5 years (reduced to 27% from year 4 under 2024 rules). It's available to employees recruited from abroad with specific expertise.

In the Netherlands, national insurance premiums (volksverzekeringen) are integrated into the Box 1 tax rate — the 36.97% rate already includes ~27.65% social premiums. You pay these through your income tax return, not as a separate payroll deduction. Employee contributions to WW (unemployment) and ZW (sickness) are paid separately via your employer.
